Braya Ray was in for a big surprise when she hopped into Meghan “Maggie” Whatley’s Uber last year. Not only did Ray, 25, unexpectedly welcome her baby daughter Grace in the backseat of Whatley’s car, but the experience bonded the pair so much that now, one year later, Whatley, 35, joined Ray’s family to celebrate Grace’s first birthday. In an exclusive report, PEOPLE shared how this extraordinary moment led to a lasting sisterhood and a heartwarming reunion at a ‘One Wild Ride’-themed party in Southfield, Michigan. Thanks to Uber, Ray’s family and friends came together for the celebration on Saturday, August 15, reuniting Whatley with the little one that she helped bring into the world.A bond forged in the backseat“I never thought one Uber ride would change my life…Now Maggie is my big sister and Grace’s godmother,” Ray told PEOPLE. What started with one Uber ride turned into a sisterhood. It became family so naturally,” adds Whatley. “We’ve become closer, and I feel like we’ve built a real sisterhood. We spend time together, talk about life, talk about guys; it really feels like having an additional sister.”The fittingly themed ‘One Wild Ride’ party at Pearls Event Center featured a bounce house with Uber car play blocks, a license plate cake decorated with ‘Uber Baby’ in frosting and an adorable ‘Passenger Princess’ onesie for Grace. About 45 family and friends attended the major milestone.A celebration of life and connection“‘One Wild Ride’ felt perfect because that one ride really can change your life,” said Ray, who is also mom to 5-year-old son Legend. “If everything hadn’t happened the way it did, we wouldn’t be here today celebrating Grace’s first birthday together.” Ray and Whatley told PEOPLE that the party came together with the help of Uber, who wanted to help “make Grace’s first birthday extra special.”“We talked about what would make the day meaningful for her and worked together to plan the celebration. It honestly meant so much to me that they took the time to come together and make her first birthday such a beautiful experience,” saod Ray. While Whatley added, “Everywhere you looked, you saw Grace and pieces of her story. It wasn’t just a generic first birthday party. The details celebrated who she is, how loved she is, and this incredible Uber story that has become part of her life from the very beginning.”A rainbow baby’s storyFor Ray, one of the most special aspects of the party was that every detail reflected her “rainbow baby” Grace and how she was brought into their lives. “Grace is my rainbow baby, so her story is one of hope, love, and answered prayers. The celebration also felt personal because of our Uber story,” she said. “Uber has been a part of our journey in a special way, and having them help celebrate Grace’s first birthday made the day even more memorable.”While Whatley knows that Grace may not remember the party when she’s older, she’s excited for her to look back at photos and see all the thoughtful details. “She will see the friends and family from both sides who came together just to celebrate her life,” she told PEOPLE. “She is going to know that she was loved, cared for, and celebrated from the very beginning. I believe having these kinds of memories and knowing how many people have poured love into her will help give her a strong foundation as she grows into a young lady.”Looking aheadLooking ahead, Ray and Whatley are excited to keep fostering their relationship and teach Grace the importance of sisterhood. “I hope Grace learns that it’s about sisterhood, and that you can help anybody and everybody, no matter their color, size or shape…Maggie helped me without hesitation. She was so caring, and I hope Grace grows up to be that kind of person too,” Ray said.
