The cancellation of NEET-UG 2026, despite measures to prevent irregularities, highlights the need for deeper procedural and institutional reforms, a parliamentary panel has said, recommending that the medical entrance examination be shifted to computer-based testing (CBT).The panel has also suggested establishing a framework to ensure the National Testing Agency (NTA) is accountable to Parliament, according to PTI.The recommendations come amid the Centre’s ongoing efforts to overhaul the country’s examination system following the NEET paper leak controversy earlier this year. On September 30, officials said the Ministry of Education was developing a national strategy to build examination-grade CBT infrastructure, potentially enabling the transition of NEET from pen-and-paper to online mode.

The final decision, however, is expected after the submission of a report by a high-level task force led by Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani. The panel was constituted to recommend reforms to strengthen public examinations and prevent paper leaks.Officials have said the proposed transition would require adequate infrastructure, standardised examination centres and safeguards to ensure equitable access, particularly for candidates in rural and low-connectivity areas.
