For months, Govinda and Sunita Ahuja’s marriage has remained a subject of intense speculation, with reports of a divorce case adding to the buzz around the couple. The situation took an unexpected turn this week after Govinda’s manager confirmed that Sunita had withdrawn the petition. The development comes at a time when Sunita’s comments about Govinda’s reported closeness with Komal Rani Swarnkar have once again brought their relationship into the spotlight. While the couple have largely refrained from discussing the legal proceedings in detail, reports have revealed when Sunita initially approached the court and the allegations cited in her petition.
What led to the divorce proceedings
According to News18, Sunita is reported to have filed a petition against Govinda on December 5, 2024, at Mumbai’s Bandra Family Court. The case reportedly sought dissolution of their marriage on grounds mentioned under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. The petition was filed under Section 13(1)(i), Section 13(1)(ia) and Section 13(1)(ib), which deal with adultery, cruelty and desertion. The Indian Express had also reported details concerning the grounds mentioned in the petition. Despite reports about the case, the couple did not openly discuss their legal situation. Govinda’s lawyer had said in August 2025 that there was no active separation between the two at that time, even though a divorce matter remained before the court.
Sunita’s comments on Govinda and Komal Rani Swarnkar
The issue gained fresh momentum after Sunita publicly criticised Govinda’s association with Komal Rani Swarnkar. The two have been linked in reports following their appearance together, with Sunita questioning the nature of their equation. Her remarks were particularly pointed when she spoke about Govinda being seen with the actor. “Picture banna bhi toh chaiye. Promotion hota hai picture banne ke baad. Kya bolne ka… Beti ki umar ki ladki ko leke ghum raha hai, sharam toh aana chaiye thoda isko. Aur standard toh hona chaiye. Tumhara sugar daddy itna ameer hai, kapde toh dhang ke pehno. Humlog ko dekho kya style mein chalte hai. Very bad, he’s lost his mind.” (First, there should actually be a film. Promotion happens after a film is made. What is there to say… He is roaming around with a girl young enough to be his daughter. He should have some shame. There should be some standards too. Your sugar daddy is so rich, at least dress properly. Look at us and the way we carry ourselves. Very bad, he’s lost his mind.)Govinda later responded to Sunita’s criticism and urged her not to demean people who may not enjoy the same wealth or status.“Aap ek bhi kasar nahi chhod rahi hain ki main logon ke dilon se utar jaun. Shohrat, izzat, daulat sab mili hui hai, uparwale ne di hai. Iska matlab ye nahi ki jiske paas nahi hai, use aap jalil karein. Aap thoda sa hadh mein rahiye.” (You are leaving no stone unturned to make me lose the respect of people. I have received fame, respect and wealth, all of it by God’s grace. That doesn’t mean you should humiliate someone who doesn’t have these things. Please stay within your limits.)
What happened at the family court
Sunita’s recent visit to a Mumbai family court once again triggered questions about the status of the marriage. However, what happened there was different from what many initially assumed. Rather than initiating another legal proceeding, Sunita was reportedly there to withdraw the divorce petition. Govinda’s manager confirmed the development on August 19, putting an end to the existing case.
Divorce petition withdrawn but questions remain
The decision to withdraw the case has come amid continued public discussion about the couple’s relationship. Sunita’s earlier allegations and her recent comments about Govinda have kept the matter in the news, even as the legal proceedings have now been brought to a close. For now, the couple have not publicly explained what prompted Sunita to withdraw the petition or whether the move signals a complete resolution of the issues that had led to the case in the first place.
