The Tamil film industry is in shock after the demise of the veteran director Bharathiraja, who passed away on June 10 due to his ill health. Director Bharathiraja was referred to as the “Iyakkunar Imayam” of the Tamil film industry. He directed well over 40 films and revolutionized the storytelling of rural themes through film. Bharathiraja was also known for having a distinct style of filmmaking and for discovering new talents.

Rajinikanth pays last respects to his friend of 50 years

As tributes continue to pour in, Superstar Rajinikanth visited Bharathiraja’s residence in Neelankarai, Chennai, to pay his final respects. Speaking to the media afterward, Rajinikanth became emotional while remembering his long friendship with the director. “He was my friend for nearly 50 years. Everyone knows about his talent and achievements. He introduced many actors, actresses, and technicians into the world of movies and contributed to the growth of Tamil cinema,” Rajinikanth said as quoted by Nakkheeran.

Rajinikanth remembers Bharathiraja

Bharathiraja’s honesty and boldness were other things that Rajinikanth recalled about the director. He used to speak out his mind, not caring for any fear, said Rajinikanth. “He was like a child at heart. Whatever he felt, he would say it directly. He used to criticize me too. He would tell me, ‘I like you as a person, but I don’t like your acting.’ That was the kind of honesty he had. Being around him was always joyful. People who speak so openly are very rare,” Rajinikanth recalled. He added that this quality helped Bharathiraja maintain close relationships with icons like MGR, Karunanidhi, and Sivaji Ganesan.

Rajinikanth regrets missing a final meeting with Bharathiraja

The actor also shared a personal regret. He revealed that he had wanted to meet Bharathiraja during his final days but was told that the director’s health was improving and that he could visit later. “Unfortunately, I never got the chance to see him one last time. That is something I will always regret. His passing was not sudden, but I still wish I had met him before he left us. He will always remain in my memories, and his works will live forever in the hearts of Tamil people,” Rajinikanth said. The connection between the two has been there since their first venture together, ’16 Vayathinile,’ where Rajinikanth played his well-known character of Parattai in one of his earliest and most notable performances.
