India ended Day 2 of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with its first medal of the campaign, while athletes delivered encouraging performances across para powerlifting, swimming, boxing and lawn bowls.The day’s biggest highlight came in para powerlifting, where Jhandu Kumar secured bronze in the men’s heavyweight event to open India’s medal tally. The Bihar lifter, who has overcome polio and financial struggles to reach the international stage, finished with 130.9 points after successful lifts of 181kg and 190kg. He narrowly missed a Commonwealth Games record with an unsuccessful 196kg attempt. Fellow Indian Sudhir placed sixth. India came close to adding another medal in para powerlifting as Ashok Malik finished fourth in the men’s lightweight event with 143.8 points, narrowly missing the podium. Paramjeet Kumar ended seventh.In para swimming, Karthik Budigina narrowly missed a medal after finishing fourth in the men’s 100m Freestyle S13 final with a time of 57.57 seconds. Teammate Imam Ali placed seventh after both Indians had progressed from the heats earlier in the day.Indian boxing also got off to a positive start. Jadumani Singh advanced to the men’s 55kg pre-quarterfinals after defeating Scotland’s Aaron Cullen by unanimous decision. He will next face Pakistan’s Sumama Rehman for a place in the quarterfinals.In swimming, Srihari Nataraj missed out on a place in the men’s 50m backstroke final after finishing seventh in his semifinal.India continued its impressive run in lawn bowls. The women’s pairs team of Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh registered their second consecutive victory by defeating South Africa. In the men’s singles, Putul Sonowal backed up his opening-day upset over world champion Ryan Bester by beating Falkland Islands’ Cecil Alexander in a tense tie-break.With one bronze medal, India ended the day joint ninth in the overall standings.
