Amitabh Bachchan often gives viewers a glimpse into his personal life while hosting ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati 18’. The veteran actor recently shared a humorous anecdote about his marriage to Jaya Bachchan, revealing the little precautions he takes when he knows he is going to return home late. During a recent episode, a contestant asked Amitabh whether Jaya scolds him when he arrives home late. His response offered an amusing insight into how the couple manages their everyday routine.
Amitabh has a way of avoiding a scolding
Amitabh explained that he prefers to inform his family in advance whenever a shoot is likely to keep him away from home for longer than expected. He said, “I know what is going to happen, so what I do is, as soon as I wake up, we have all our family members’ names saved in our contacts and have made a group where I send a message saying, ‘Namaskar’ with folded hands. Then I tell them that I have a shoot somewhere and will be late, so they should not wait for me for dinner. I inform all beforehand, and that saves me.” The actor jokingly admitted that failing to send such an update could lead to questions from Jaya about his whereabouts.“But suppose I didn’t tell her (Jaya Bachchan), then I will be scolded and asked, ‘Where were you? You didn’t inform us. Is this the time to come home?’ So, if I am very late, she eats her dinner and goes to sleep herself.”
Big B says he handles household work
The conversation also led Amitabh to reveal that he does not hesitate to take care of household chores when the staff is not around. “Whether there are four, eight, or 10 staff members, when there is no one at home, I do all the work myself. I take care of the cleaning and everything,” he said. The actor also admitted that cooking is not one of his strengths. When there is no one available to prepare a meal, he said the family either orders food or he turns to Jaya for help. “I don’t know how to cook, so sometimes we order food from outside, or sometimes I ask Jaya, ‘Deviji, please make something.’ That makes her very excited, and she makes different dishes for me every day and asks how I liked the food.” His comments highlighted the playful and affectionate equation the couple continues to share after decades of marriage.
How Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan got married
Amitabh and Jaya first met professionally around the time of ‘Guddi’ in 1971. Their relationship grew closer over the following years, with Amitabh and Jaya eventually working together in ‘Ek Nazar’ in 1972. Their romance progressed while they were working in the industry, and the success of ‘Zanjeer’ in 1973 became an important turning point in their relationship. The couple had reportedly planned a trip to London with friends. When Amitabh sought his father Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s permission, he was told that travelling together would require them to get married first. Amitabh and Jaya subsequently tied the knot in a private ceremony on June 3, 1973, before leaving for London.
Their family life
Over the years, Amitabh and Jaya welcomed two children, daughter Shweta Bachchan and son Abhishek Bachchan. The couple are also grandparents to Navya Naveli Nanda, Agastya Nanda and Aaradhya Bachchan. While Amitabh continues to be one of Indian cinema’s most active personalities, his candid stories on ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati 18’ regularly offer audiences a lighter look at his life away from the screen.
