Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers and key details from the film ‘Masters of the Universe‘. Reader discretion is advised if you haven’t watched it yet. After his success with ‘The Sheep Detectives’, Nicholas Galitzine is back again, this time in the lead with ‘Masters of the Universe.’ The 1980s nostalgia is real as the film brings back the iconic He-Man to the big screen with a fresh new take. Directed by Travis Knight, the film is set to be released on June 5; however, with the early screenings, early reviews are out, and here’s what they are saying about the action-fantasy film.
‘Masters of the Universe’: Critics rave about a fresh take
According to Rotten Tomatoes, one critic’s review stated that “Freed from the burden of contemporary relevance, ‘Masters of the Universe’ succeeds by doing something refreshingly straightforward: telling a rousing fantasy adventure with conviction, humor, and heart.” While another shared, “The film is tons of fun, especially for 14-year-old boys. There are more sword-based double entendres than one can shake a whatever at.”Another critic wrote on the website that “The adaptation of the toys-turned-cartoon instead joins the ranks of knowing IP films that play on nostalgia to serve up something fun and a little meaningful in a candy-coated shell.” Another critic rated the film 3 out of 5 and stated, “Masters of the Universe is as a typical popcorn movie: something fun and not too serious with a focus on loud action scenes filled with special effects. For a film that has an iconic 80s toy as its hero, audiences shouldn’t expect anything less.”Film reviewer Brian McWilliams took to his social media and stated that “Saw an early screening of Masters of the Universe. Fun movie, great visuals and battles, and some decent comedy that stays honest to the source material. My only complaint was it does have the “millennial” writing style that’s in everything now, where no one can just say something without having some contrived secondary line of dialogue undermining their first statement. Still, I enjoyed it.”Olde Man Grim further wrote that “the special effects are FANTASTIC! Seriously, I felt like the practical effects and costuming were pretty amazing, and the CGI stuff seriously felt like peak Marvel era work (not the garbage CGI we got from Phase 4 onward).”
